Parrot mimics owner’s voice to boss around her other pets

January 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

A parrot that learned to mimic his owner’s voice is using the skill to issue orders to her other pets. A great news from Telegraph.co.uk from How about that? category.

Barney, an African Grey Parrot, calls Margaret Sullivan’s three dogs – Harry, Tilly and Bluey – by name.

The bird, 10, squawks out orders like “come here” and even offers praise to his favourites such as “good dog”.

Mrs Sullivan, 65, who lives in Tredworth, Gloucestershire, with partner Ken Kersey, 62, admitted that Barney has a “very high opinion of himself”.

She said: “Barney’s a really bossy parrot. He even chats back at me and swears when I’m talking sometimes – he’s so cheeky.

“He’s always tried to learn how to speak in my voice but he has got better and better at it ever since I bought him.

“Barney’s got a really high opinion of himself and he certainly likes to think he’s my favourite out of the pets. He’s not – but I would never tell him that.”

Mr and Mrs Sullivan own three dogs, Alsatian-Collie cross Harry, 12, Cairn terrier Tilly, three, and her son Bluey, eight-months.

Mrs Sullivan, a grandmother-of-seven, bought Barney as a young parrot in 1998 and he has been perfecting her voice and accent ever since.

His favourite games is calling out to a cat named Shadow. He then praises him when he does as he is told and sits on top of Barney’s cage.

Mr Sullivan said: “He always says ‘come here’, ‘come on’ and ‘good dog’ to the pets and gives out orders to all the animals in Margaret’s voice.

“It’s uncanny. He mimics her perfectly and when the dogs come over to the cage as if they are following his orders.

“The animals all think he’s Margaret when he speaks. He loves ordering them around and commanding them – it’s very surprising. He’s not frightened or scared of them at all.”

Ten Commandments for A Responsible Dog Owner

January 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As dictated by dog from Leslie Bocobo.

  1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
  2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
  3. Put your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
  4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments. But I have only you.
  5. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
  6. Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I do understand your voice when you talk to me.
  7. Before you hit me, before you strike or kick me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, and yet I choose not to bite you, because I love you.
  8. Before you scold me for being lazy and uncooperative, ask yourself if something could be bothering me. Perhaps you’re not feeding me the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old and weak.
  9. Please take good care of me when I grow old. You too will grow old and I would like to still be with you when that time comes.
  10. On the difficult journey, on that ultimate journey, go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Take a moment today to thank God for your dogs. Enjoy them and take good care of them. Life would be a bit dull and less joyful without man’s best friend.

Feline Obesity: An Epidemic of Fat Cats

December 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Here’s a great articles from Lisa A. Pierson, DVM from catinfo.org
Enjoy!

Feline Obesity

When was the last time you saw an obese lion? How about a chubby cheetah? Or a fat tiger? Have you ever seen an overweight leopard or panther? If you have ever watched nature programs on TV, I am sure that you know the answer to the questions just posed.

The answer is “never”.

The next questions are also easy ones to answer – even if you are like me and turn your head when these scenes pop up on the screen!

Do these wild cats eat a dry food diet that is full of starchy carbohydrates in the form of grains? Do they eat a water-depleted diet in the form of dry kibble? Is their diet one that derives much of its protein from plants (versus meat) as is true of many dry food diets?

The answers are, again, simple: “no”, “no” and “no”.

There is a wonderful program on the TLC channel entitled Honey We’re Killing the Kids. This program addresses the obesity epidemic in this country – starting with what we are feeding to our children. Americans are eating themselves right into an early grave but that is their choice. Our cats, on the other hand, do not have a choice and are stuck with whatever their human caregiver decides to put on their dinner plate and we owe it to them to feed a healthy diet.
